A mantra (also called Dharani in certain cases) is a mystical formula relating to a deity (which can be Hindu, Buddhist or even Jain).
The practitioner repeats the mantra and uses it as a tool to purify
and channel your mind, the sound of the mantra also being
capable of modifying its environment.

invocations and “magic formulas”.
When a temple or a statue of the Buddha is consecrated by the Lamas,
they place mantras there in a very precise and codified way.
