This ancient Khmer amulet depicts Durga Mahishasuramardini , the great goddess who triumphed over the buffalo demon Mahisha. Cast in ancient metal with a deep patina, it displays a typically Khmer iconography, recognizable by the elaborate headdress, the dynamic pose, and the multiple arms holding attributes now partially worn by time.

The goddess is depicted in a warrior dance pose, a symbol of movement, power, and triumph over chaotic forces. Despite natural erosion, several arms are still clearly visible, as well as the presence of the chakra, a major attribute of divine sovereignty and cosmic protection.

Durga in Khmer culture

In ancient Khmer culture, Durga held a central place in the royal Hinduism practiced during the pre-Angkorian and Angkorian periods. She was venerated as the supreme manifestation of Shakti, the feminine energy that is both creative and destructive. Represented as Mahishasuramardini, she embodies the victory of cosmic order over chaos, a central theme in Khmer spirituality.

The Khmer rulers associated Durga with the legitimacy of their power, the protection of the kingdom, and the ability to overcome hostile forces, both visible and invisible. Images of Durga were often placed in shrines or carried as votive offerings to attract protection, courage, stability, and spiritual strength.

This amulet fits perfectly into this tradition, blending devotion, warrior symbolism and sacred protection.
