Antique Japanese Suzu bell in bronze with inscription 鈴寶

Antique Japanese bell of the Suzu type, in enameled cast iron with a dark patina, octagonal in shape with original molded upper ring and traditional red rope.

The main face bears the inscription in kanji鈴寶, which can be translated as “Precious Bell” or “Bell Treasure”. The character 寶 is in its archaic form here, reinforcing the traditional style of the object.

This suzu was probably intended for votive or ritual use in a Japanese Shinto or Buddhist context. Its interior contains a chime ball that produces a clear, sacred ring, typical of shrine bells.

The thick cast iron, natural patina, and overall style suggest a 20th-century production, possibly from the Showa period. A label with the inscription "受山" is found beneath the bell.

  • 受 (ju / ukeru) = receive

  • 山 (yama/san) = mountain

A spiritual object rich in symbolism, the suzu bell is traditionally used to purify spaces, attract the attention of the kami, or accompany prayer. Its clear ringing is associated with purification and awakening.

When the bell rings, it does more than just produce a sound. It opens a space.
An invisible threshold between the material world and the subtle world. This suzu carries within it the memory of temples, silent offerings, and gestures repeated at dawn.
