These beautiful glass reliquaries are filled with grains of Hin Khao San fossil rice from the Sukhothai region. A larger grain was carved into the shape of a stylized Buddha, Phra Somdej, by a forest monk, Phra Siwali.
Fossil rice is, according to legend, rice from the Buddha's monk's bowl, which fell out when the Buddha washed his bowl and multiplied and petrified over time.
Besides being a very sacred relic, this fossil rice is considered a powerful fertility talisman for both crops and humans.
